A Community-Owned Island That Powers Itself

Despite being one of the smallest Scottish islands with just 110 residents, the Isle of Eigg is a model of forward-thinking, sustainable, eco-conscious living. Owned by its inhabitants since 1996, the island was the world’s first community to launch in 2008 an off-grid electric system powered by wind, water and solar. Varying on the weather, its uses as much as 90% of renewable energy.
